I just finished my install of my 6300 and after about 20 hours or so I started smelling smoke through the registers. After searching this morning for where it was coming from I found that I am leaking around the shaft from the agitator motor. I called USSC but they are closed today for the holiday. After the stove cools off I am going to start tearing down. I was hoping maybe someone had ran into this problem and could help me with a fix.

Thanks

Jerry

Look down a couple of posts: 6300 not burning cleanly, by mellissasmith, then go to page 3 on the post there is info there that you need to follow up on.

Firepot I did not see anything on that post that fits my problem. I know where I am getting the stray smoke. It is coming through the seal on the shaft for the agitator. After tearing it down I think my bushing is too loose on the shaft and the housing.

Thanks tho.

I had the same issue. The problem is a defective exhaust fan. see the post http://forum.iburncorn.com/viewtopic.php?t=9486&start=30

I called USS and they sent me a new exhaust fan and it fixed the issue for me.

I'd have to agree with the exhaust fan theory. There are tons of gaps and holes that are going to let smoke out of the unit into your house if you do not maintain a negative pressure inside the burn chamber. I'd say you either have issues with your exhaust fan, or you adjusted your exhaust fan down so far that it stalled out on you. Your best bet is to maintain a restriction on the intake air to the combustion chamber, so that you can run your exhaust fan at a higher speed without moving any more air thru the fire.....and therefore maintaining your overall draft thru the fire-pot. The higher you can run your draft fan the better, as the faster it runs with a restricted intake, the more negative pressure you will run in the burn chamber, and the smoke will not be able to seep out of all of the cracks and holes.

When I got the new exhaust fan I looked at the differences. On the new one there was a seal on the fan shaft to prevent smoke bypass. On the old fan there was a bunch of ash build up and soot all around that area and no seal in place. Just call and get a new exhaust fan. It was very easy to change.

Sounds like a missing part during the install (seal)? Might be worth taking pictures of what you have and a new one when you get it, and posting them up here. No smoke out of my 6300, but we all learn cool things from the pictures.

I had the same problem with smoke when the second room fan kicked on. After looking around I found smoke coming from draft fan shaft. Other posters said that there was a seal missing , and that is what I found.
I called USSC and must have been lucky because I got thru right away.
I talked to a Christina, and she said that was a problem they were having on some of the stoves. She asked for some pics of the install, and said she would talk to the techs about it. She called back 15 mins later and said she would send out a repair kit, and would contact a installer to set up a appointment with me for the repair. At this point I am happy how this going, but will have to wait and see how this ends.

Just an FYI to anyone that has a 6300. If you have not gotten the exhaust fan upgrade from usstove....STOP using your stove until you do this. I thought mine was alright and now my house is full of soot and this stove has caused 20k worth of damage to my house....full ductwork replacement...the whole nine yards. USstove has addmitted a defect and hundreds of people are in the same situation as I am. They also have said this affects EVERY 6300 out there, so dont think you are safe!!

Tig - interesting. I've been in close contact with their engineering dept for the past couple of weeks as I've had some problems with my 6300 and haven't heard about this until now.

I was told my problems should go away once the retro fit kit was installed. It's been installed for 48 hours and my filter is still white. I will have to ask them about this exhaust fan upgrade tomorrow.

Jerry - have you had the retro fit kit installed? (http://www.retrofitsite.com/) I called them and they sent me the kit and they pay for the install by a local HVAC tech. If you don't have this done it along with the exhaust fan upgrade my help solve the problem.

Tig is correct.....USSC is really hush hush on fault but if you have a 6300 beware....and make sure your install is correct ....when you send pictures they are looking for a reason to deny the claim so dot all the i's and cross all the t's
