Does the lid on the hopper have to be closed. I am thinking of making a hopper extension and need to know if it I take it off or leave it open, will it shut the stove down? Thanks _________________ Rick H |

JET answered this question in approx 2006. If I recall correctly, he said that the lid serves no operational function. However, to receive product certification, a warning label was required, then later a shutoff switch, which, I presume could be easily bypassed. The requirement is no doubt a carryover from the risks posed by auger stoves in which the auger is a conduit between the burn chamber and the hopper.
A full extended hopper would add more load on the feedwheel cover. You wouldn't want to go too high. Use your search button and I think you'll find at least one successful example.
Any mods to your stove could void your warranty and your insurance. _________________ Bixby 115 MaxFire.

The 115 doesn't have a switch on the lid so you can run it with a extension.
My experience was after filling my extension I would have a feeder wheel malfunction and have to empty it. just a lousy coincidence but sort of humbling.
The UBB does have a lid switch. |

Thx, Rona. I thought that JET said that they'd be putting lid switches on to assuage the certifier. Mine (a 2005 model) doesn't have one. Good that later models don't either. _________________ Bixby 115 MaxFire.

How big is/was your extension? Are you still using the extension? Do you think weight was the culprit of the feeder wheel malfunction? Thanks _________________ Rick H |

... which is why I remembered some of it (less the lid switch part, anyhow). _________________ Bixby 115 MaxFire.

It held three 5 gallon pails of corn and it worked good for the times we would be gone for a long weekend.
The weight didn't cause the problem. Human error or a "lazy man's stove" was the culprit as I had neglected cleaning the fines out of the corn.
The only problem is the placement of the controls for the Bixby as they are in back of the extension. |

I never did find a consensus on whether the added weight would hurt the feeder wheel motor. Any thoughts? _________________ Rick H |

In my 2006, JET responded that the UBB has tall extensions with the same feeder wheel and motor. The only diff is a larger feedwheel cover, which I presume extends a little further down so that less of the feedwheel is exposed. It would be easy to fab an extension for the feedwheel cover. _________________ Bixby 115 MaxFire.

| I could measure the difference between the UBB and the 115 tomorrow and post it in the morning. |
