I too have problems keeping this big house warm on cold nights. Last night it got down to 3 degrees and it did keep up but anything below zero and it lags a degree or two. I think my burn box gets plenty hot as I go through a ton of corn on these cold nights and the fire is huge. I have switched the blower to high which has clearly made a difference but it does not move as much air as the propane furnace does.
I really appreciate your input. thanks.

How is the air flow now? What plenum temperature are you running at high burn? To find out after your furnace has been at high burn for 5-10 minutes (trying to catch up to the thermostat) remove the cover to the fan limit swtich and see where your degree pointer is at. It should be somewhere between your low and high fan limit. I think the factory setting is 100 on 150 off. _________________ Don't go to the Woods without your Skirt!

As a follow up, I added another run off the plenum to the house increasing the airflow to the house, this has made a hugh difference. I plan on adding more and then adding to the cold air return. The bone head who installed it ran only an 8 x 24 inch in and out to heat a 5K sq. foot house. He had 3 times that much comming off my propane furnace.

So you added another run from the plenum and got better air flow? I was under the assumption you couldn't push enough air through the duct work that you already had because the blower didn't have the power to do so? _________________ Don't go to the Woods without your Skirt!

It is now apparent to me that it is mostly the size of the duct work. I plan on changing the 8 x 24 to a 10x24 as well and then adding some more cold air return. The blower on the biomass is a 1/3 HP and the propane furnace has a 1/2 HP (I blieve). So it may be a combination.
