Hey Guys/Gals/Amigos,

I found this link in my current HomePower mag and thought I would share it. This company has LED light bulbs for sale.

http://www.ccrane.com/lights/led-light-bulbs/index.aspx

I know they are very expensive but what do you all think of the specs? Hopefully the price will come down soon.

LED lights will come along, but these are very low power versions except for the undercabinet lights. Even those are only low to moderate output.

I have 9 years in LED system design, and there are many industrial and commercial applications out or now coming out. Residential is still low light output for low cost, and most people are disappointed by them because of low light output. You'll start seeing some high end residential lights this year, mostly can lamps (recessed ceiling). But they'll be $75-100 each for the equivalent of a 60W bulb output.

I installed 4 undercabinet lights, of excellent quality and light output, and the system cost $320.

Prices will be dropping, but what you will want to pay means waiting 3-5 years.

I'm waiting for more standard lighting LED lamps to get in the stores. Now it's night-lights, flashlights and small stick-up lights. I have one of the flashlights and a night-light. The flashlight is really good and the nightlight I leave on 24/7 instead of turning off every morning. They need a more efficient way to make the arrays to get the cost down. The new traffic signal arrays are saving a lot on the public's electric bills and maintenance expenses.

We have a night light in our bathroom fan fixture that's a PITA to change. I replaced it with an LED and I'm guessing the LED will outlast the bathroom.

Certainly could be - you can dump an amp of current into some of the high power LEDs. And landing lights would need several. One of my former colleagues is there at Honeywell - have to ask him sometime.

TC, that's why I tell people to wait 3-5 years. We'll see many more lights, and more reasonably priced, by then. My first project was an LED flashlight back in 2000 and it was fun to design it. I had all kinds of flashlights at home to test and play with while I was designing it. My wife was wondering how many I had and had my kids count them. I had 47 flashlights - just in the bedroom! Embarassed

Signals are a great application - replace a 125-150W light bulb with a 15W device. In CA alone, that was worth 1/4 of a large power plant's electrical output. The only problem with them - they won't melt snow/ice on the front lens, which is a problem up north. For some reason, the national regulatory boards (ITE in the US) won't require a heater for winter use.

Speaking of flashlights, I had to use my trusty Streamlight UltraStinger to break up a fight last night on our street. That is one great light in my opinion! Plenty of power but not LED. Whacked the first chap across the head with the skinny part and he rolled off the poor guy on the ground that was being whupped quite well. Shocked Neighborhood Watch/Security can get interesting at times. The second of the two guys doing the whupping on the third got a lesser taste of the handle and decided he didn't want any problems. End of problem. Just hate that I forgot my Fox pepper spray! Shocked

That's a lot of punch. Even at just 50 lumens per watt, that's 250,000 lumens of output - pretty impressive!

LED area lights (parking lot, etc) would use less than 1/4 of that.
