I am a diehard corn burner because I raise my own corn.
I cannot help but think that these current high corn prices have to be murder to corn stove manufacturers. I am certain I would not burn corn at the current price level if I did not have easy access.
Anyone have opinions or rumors to spread concerning corn stove companies status and well-being ? _________________ My Therapist Recommends Shock Therapy. |

Corn is still about half the price of oil, here. It is also significantly less expensive than pellets. We're happily burning corn again this year. _________________ Bixby 115 MaxFire.

burning some pellets with natural gas backup since the gas is cheaper than both corn and pellets. at the moment. i will have to imagine that it could be a tough year for some stove mfg. co.. sales may abound, and still might be a good year to buy a stove, if the prices come down enough. for hopefully future use when prices right themselves on the fuel. stranger things have happened. _________________ Quadra Fire

I'll probably still burn corn at a much reduced rate. I just installed a new 2 stage gas furnace so that will be the primary heat source. However I still enjoy tinkering with the corn stove and watching the flicker of the flame. _________________ __________________________USSC 6039________________________

You will have to let us know what kind of savings you have financially with your new system as opposed to burning corn. My stove is primarily used as a secondary system that I use to thaw out on those cold winter days. I pay about 135 bucks a month in the real cold part of winter to heat my house. Twenty of that is hot water. |

Buy a multi-fuel burner so you can burn the lowest priced "pellet" fuel. Corn burners are classified as "pellet" stoves although some corn burning stoves should only use corn. _________________ Countryside 3500P (pedestal version) used 8-9 yrs, 24/7 during days requiring heat. All original motors. Burns moldy corn, and pellets equally well. Burn it if you got it.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Corn prices killing stoves for people who buy. If you have your own, great but buying is very high. Most people won't admit it but corn stoves really being priced out of the market. I'll give you a indicator-----Just look back thru the listings on this website of corn stoves for sale. NO INTEREST at all in anyone buying a used stove. Personally I have a 2100 Nesco/Amaizablaze for sale and NOT ONE query. It's really sad......For me personally I can burn pellets at 169 a ton easier than I can burn corn at 5.80 bushel........ |

I disagree for a couple reasons. It won't come down, in fact, it will continue to rise and rise appreciably..... Next year, you'll see 6dollar plus corn. It might rise and fall a bit, but the average price will keep increasing, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see corn at soybean prices in 2 years.
Simply, this is why Obama's mandate for increased ethanol usage in automobiles and the grain shortage in Europe.
The good thing is that inputs are stable so there is money to be made in corn and not in burning it either. The other good thing is, as corn prices (and futures) rise, cattle contractors are returning to baled forage for finishing off cattle and that bodes well for my forage business. Bale prices are dismal this year. I didn't final cut any field. I let them stand. It costs more to process than the end product is bringing.
My take on appliance manufacturers is simply when the 1500 buck stimulus rebate runs on 12-31-2010 there will be no incentive to even try to offset fuel costs with bio-fuel appliances because the input price ratio (for most people) is out of wack. Consequently, manufacturers will be saddled with excess inventory and the price per unit will drop and drop appreciably.... Of course the smaller outfits and those that aren't diversified will go tits up. Remember, the economy isn't robust anyway.
This isn't like an automobile where it wears out and you get a new one every few years...... With a little common sense (that's asking a lot from some) and some preventive maintenance, barring consumables, a unit should run 10 plus years. _________________ Flipmeisters Specialty Products, LLC
