How can you determine good pellets from junk ones? I bought some from Tractor supply and they seem to make little ash but it looks like a sparkler with all of the fine dust being blown around.
How can I measure the heat output of my countryflame stove?
I have a digital thermometer hanging in front of the air vent and was wondering if there is a better way to take measurements? |

thick bag?
premium designation?
100% wood?
low ash?
low fines?
smells like wood?
pellets of uniform size?
I prefer smaller, but I had someone in the business tell me otherwise.
best to try a few bags of the type you can get locally and reliably. Someone said pellets were $3 at walmart, at that price I would burn most anything. _________________ Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness. MT |

I was escorting my significant other this evening at Wal Mart and found Nature Heat bags at _________________ When you turn your boiler on - - Does it return the favor?

was in the big city today at lowes, they had natures heat for 5.28 a bag.-
as far as sparkler affect. when a load of pellets drop into the pot, it is going to make sparks. the air from the exhaust fan is going to blow them up in the air. _________________ Quadra Fire

| I bought a bunch of Natures Heat, by Pennington, from Home Depot, and they are really crap. The heat produced is low, the window blackens quicker, and it makes clinkers. Nasty product, stay away from it. I think anythng would be a better value. |

Got two tons of White Lighting pellets from Kentucky Hardwood floor co. Oak Hardwood pellets, very uniform in size, and very bright when burning. Burn real hot and doesn't have many fines in the bags. I think of the 5 types I have tried, really like them the best. Had some "others" left over from last year, that were purchased from Lowes. Will save those to light the furnace. _________________ LDJ 165K BOILER / Harman PC45 / Kan_Burn Cleaner/Mover - the original |

nogaspains,
Where do you get these pellets? Im not too far from you and have family in Cincy, might have to try them out? Up here where I am at, most of then are Nature Heat and other brands I am not fond of. _________________ Second year w/ Quadra-fire Mt. Verrnon AE

I think it may make a difference in the quality of the pellet to burn when they are used to start the fire, corn or pellets. I know I had some corn cob pellets that burned after they got going but weren't worth a hoot for starting the fire. I could start the fire with them but they had to be "nursed" along to get them burning. I never spent a lot of time with different wood pellets to see if one brand was better than another for starting the fire but it's something that I suspect. _________________ Countryside 3500P (pedestal version) used 8-9 yrs, 24/7 during days requiring heat. I just got back from Menards purchasing 1/2 ton of mostly Pennywise by Marthwood. I did manage to pick up 3 bags of Greenway. I was wondering about this brand. Has anyone heard of them and are they any good? Bag says that it's 100% Premium Hardwood with <1% Ash and <0.5% Fines & <300 ppm Sodium.
Got them for $3.49/bag. Also talked my way into getting 5 ripped bags that were less than full for only $1.00 a bag.
Thanks - _________________ Daniel

The Greenway pellets are manufactured by Hassel & Hughes (Southern Tennesse). Their last run of Greenway pellets indicated an ash content of 0.36%! Their website is:

They sound like they are very good pellets. Should smell good too. _________________ Countryside 3500P (pedestal version) used 8-9 yrs, 24/7 during days requiring heat. All original motors. Burns moldy corn, and pellets equally well. Burn it if you got it.

They are on the east side off of I275 on RT 125 (Beechmont) about 1.5 miles from the interstate. Heavenly Hearth. The pellets are called Country Boy White Lightning.

Based on that info, I went back and bought 25 more bags of Greenway. Now I have 2 tons in my basement waiting to get burned.
On a side note, I found this on E-bay... I thought I'd share the laugh with all of you.
http://cgi.ebay.com/WOOD-PELLETS-FOR-PELLET-CORN-STOVES-READY-TO-BURN_W0QQitemZ250185826272QQihZ015QQcategoryZ41987QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
This works to about $42.00/bag... $4.95/13lbs + $8.95 shipping... These pellets better not produce any ash or fines at that price. And people thought corn prices were high.
Today it's been the coldest its been this season (high of about 36). Gonna get the boiler running by tomorrow.
