Outdoor corn boilers
From Cornburning
Outdoor Corn Burning Boilers have several advantages over Indoor furnaces or boilers, and indoor corn burning stoves, for that matter.
Advantages
1. Heat can be used in forced air, radiant floor, hot water, a combination of the previous, and virtually any other non-electric heating method you can think of.
2. NO SEPARATE CHIMNEY NEEDED! No $$$$$ stainless steel chimney lining.
3. Large quantities of corn can easily be delivered to a bulk bin, hands free, no constant labor.
4. Multiple buildings can be heated with ONE furnace, keeping costs down.
5. Mice, insects, fly ash, and any possible odors stay outside of your home, while only cheap heat comes inside.
Diadvantages
1. High initial cost? Not really that much more expensive than indoor units. My Nature-Heat Thor was around $4,000 last year. Steel went up for everybody, and they're still reasonable. LDJ wanted $5,000 for an indoor unit that looked like a cheap converted 40 gal electric water heater. The proven outdoor corn furnace brands are a better choice over indoor units.
I got into alternative heating first looking at wood fired boilers. The smoke was an immediate turnoff, especially close to neighbors. I am SO GLAD I found corn heating! This is such an issue that there is a special page for information about why you don't want an outdoor wood boiler.
