Outdoor boilers are the way to go. I have an old farm house in Canada with minimal insulation .Keeping it at 63 degrees uses about a tank of oil every 2 weeks ,even with wood stove supplementing. I put in a Pelco boiler and about 14 tonnes of corn heat me the hole winter at about 78 degree's. There is little or no smoke little ash and no hauling wood every morning and night no piling or splitting no manual cleaning of ash .My only issue is the size available the smallest [which i have]is 750 000 BTU but as i said big old uninsulated house doesn't really go to waste except in spring and fall on warm er days
