Make sure boiler is off, but ready to go. Never start a fire in your boiler unless it is fully charged with water and is at the desired system pressure. Each time you start your system is an excellent time to check for leaks. Occasionally it is good to test the pressure release valve by opening it and making sure it drains water from the system.
- The PB150 boiler is supplied with a plug in the metering cup. If burning wood pellets only, this plug can be removed to in order to increase the firing rate.
- Add fuel to the hopper. If burning corn, add a soup can full of oyster shell to the corn as the corn level reaches the point where the hopper walls become vertical . On very cold days, when your boiler is burning hard, add a second can of oyster shell to the hopper when full.
- Set shutter on draft fan at 50% (1/2 way open).
- On the aqua stat, set the high limit control on the left side at 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Low limit control on the right side at 160 degrees Fahrenheit. And the differential setting at 130 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the factory preset settings.
- Set the control panel cycle time to eight minutes and the pilot draft switch at medium.
- Put one soup can of oyster shell into the bottom of the burn pot.
- Place 40-60 ounces of wood pellets into the burn pot. (Large cans of Hormel chili are 40oz and make an excellent measure for the amount of wood pellets you need)
- Add gelled alcohol to the wood pellets. It is also possible, and cheaper, to use charcoal lighter fluid on the pellets in a cold boiler. However, keep in mind this is DANGEROUS and you must use extreme caution. Make very certain the boiler is cold and there is no live ash in the ash pan. Use a great deal of caution as you spray the pellets with charcoal lighter fluid.
- Set fire to the wood pellets.
- Close the firedoor and let fire establish for several minutes.
- When fire is well established, set the on/off primary control to Feed System
- Combustion fan should come on to high speed. The fire in the pot will increase.
When the safety disc (Read Traeger Safety Disc Troubleshooting) on the smoke box at the top of the boiler reaches 120 degrees Fahrenheit it will turn on and the cup and feed auger motors will start adding more fuel to the fire pot. Let the unit run until the low limit is satisfied. Burner will cycle back to pilot mode.
On a simple heating system, when the temperature reaches the temperature set on the low limit control, the circulation pump will come on supplying hot water to the radiator system. On more complex systems, using multiple pumps, this control will many times be handled by an external control unit.
