There are many different designs of corn cleaners. Basically what you are doing is removing the fine particles, cracked kernels, and dust, which can impede oxygen flow and therefore the fire. And then also, you are removing the oversized pieces, stalks, rocks and other foreign material which can cause problems with the feed system.

In addition to commercial units, there are many options for build it yourself projects for building your own screening system

Ahshuck's Homemade Screener

A screener such as the type on the right is an immitation of a multi-screen system such as the Clipper fanning mill. The corn will be poured in at the top, first traveling through a course screen allowing kernels to pass through and over-sized pieced to be filtered out. The second screen is finer and stops the kernels, allowing the undersized particles to be removed. Many times there is an air component as well that removes dust.

The only drawback to these units is the speed at which they clean the corn, because the screens are stationary, unlike the Clipper. The corn must feed only using gravity to pass through the system. The Clipper Fanning Mill, using gravity and vibration is much quicker.

Additionally, this is an extra step in the corn handling process, unlike the Inline systems described below.

Corny's cleaner-funnel, at right, acts as a funnel while separating and saving fines for other uses such as bird feed. It isn't pretty but it works and it can be made in about 15 minutes. [How to fabricate the cone]

PVC Corn Screeners

Several inovative designs of corn cleaners have been built by enterprising corn burners. In this style it uses a reverse flow of air, provided by a shop vac to remove particles and dust. The corn is poured into the top and has to pass through the airstream to fall out of the bottom.

Kan_BurnMover/Cleaner

The Kan-Burn cleaner is a hybrid system of both cleaning and transporting corn. It uses a high power shopvac and pvc pipe to move the corn and filter at the same time. A great deal of work has been done to test and modify the Kan-Burn system.
